What Is Leadership?

Jack Welch, former CEO and Chairman of General Electric, an NY Times best-selling author, and founder of the Jack Welch Management Institute, wrote in his book Winning that, "Leadership is truth and trust."
And John Maxwell, a New York Times best-selling author, has stated, “The true measure of leadership is INFLUENCE, nothing more nothing less.” (link)

The Cornerstones
Cornerstones are the basis of a framework for developing one's Leadership skills and capabilities. In this framework, these four Cornerstones are the primary, fundamental characteristics for leaders today.
- Truth
- Trust
- Communication
- Emotional Intelligence
Might there be other Cornerstones? Yes.
For example if you are a leader in a religious or spiritual community, then, Spirituality might be fundamental for you. Or if you work in the world of not-for-profit foundations, then Service might be a fundamental.
The key here is that each Cornerstone is a core characteristic for your leadership development and application.

Communication
Communication has multiple dimensions including: self-talk, speaking, writing, body language, public speaking and more.
By Self-Talk, we mean that what we say to ourselves is truthful, and yet stays positive. This can include writing notes to oneself, daily affirmations, goal planning, etc.
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence or EI, according to Daniel Goleman, best author of multiple books on EI, is comprised of five key elements: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills.
